I am interested in the connection I felt to nature when I was growing up in the countryside. My work attempts to capture that earlier, immersive relationship with my environment. Using certain objects found in nature, I explore their intricate anatomies in large-scale drawings. The lines and speckles of an animal's skin are depicted in acute detail, as one might see in a Chuck Close portrait. By magnifying the object's ornate textures, the drawing spotlights its elegant beauty. Meanwhile darkly humorous titles question how humans interact with, use, and manipulate nature. Thus my work highlights the beauty of nature, while also alluding to our catastrophic exploitation of animals in the pursuit of beauty.
